This study was conducted using the piglet model to test the hypothesis that mucosal cells of the neonatal small intestine can degrade nutritionally essential amino acids (EAA). Enterocytes were isolated from the jejunum of 0-, 7-, 14-, and 21-day-old pigs, and incubated for 45 min in Krebs buffer containing plasma concentrations of amino acids and one of the following L-[1-14C]- or L-[U-14C]-amino acids plus unlabeled tracees at 0.5, 2, or 5 mM: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine....
