Magnetic nitrogen-doped sludge-derived biochar catalysts for persulfate activation: Internal electron transfer mechanism

摘要:
Persulfate-based advanced oxidation process is a powerful countermeasure for water remediation, where effective and low-cost catalysts are still needed. Herein, a one-pot synthetic method for magnetic nitrogen-doped sludge biochar (MS-biochar) was presented, which exhibited better catalytic property with PDS for tetracycline degradation than typical graphitic carbon (graphite powder, graphene oxide and multiwalled carbon nanotubes) and two other types biochars. EDAX manifested the uniform dispersion of elements in MS-biochar. Similar to “top-down” a research thought from whole to part of MS-biochar for contribution measurement was presented, where acid-soluble substance (ASS) was the most important contributor for MS-400/600 while carbon matrix (CM) was dominant for MS-800. Quenching and EPR demonstrated a free-radicals pathway in MS-biochar/PDS, where ASS mainly assumed to be effective for SO4[rad]− and CM was primarily committed to [rad]OH generation. EDAX, XPS and Raman studies proved three kinds of catalytic sites, namely the iron compounds, doped nitrogen and graphitic carbon. And their activating mechanism were discussed where one internal electron migration path (from sp3 to nanocrystalline sp2 carbon) has been first proposed. Reusability, metal leaching detection and pharmaceutical wastewater application indicated the potential of MS-biochar. This work not only presents a potential resource-based disposal of sewage sludge, a novel research thought from whole to part for materials performance measurement, but also provides guidance for carbon materials’ design for persulfate activation, especially for sp2 and sp3 co-hybridized carbons. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

摘要:
Chromium metal-organic framework (MIL-101(Cr)) has been widely studied for removing organic contaminants from aqueous solutions due to its excellent water stability and giant pore size, but its low adsorption capacity limits the application. In this study, a new adsorbent MIL-101 loaded with CuCo bimetallic nanoparticles (CuCo/MIL-101) was successfully fabricated and applied in removal of tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption capacity of CuCo/MIL-101 for TC increased by 140% compared with that of pure MIL-101, which may be attributed to the chemical bonding between Cu and Co BNPs in MIL-101 and TC molecules. The effects of pH, ionic strength, humic acid and contact time on the adsorption were also discussed in detail. The results showed that the removal efficiency of TC solution with high concentration (100mgL(-1)) by CuCo/MIL-101 was still as high as 82.9%. The data of adsorption kinetics and isotherms could be well fitted by Elovich model and Freundlich model, respectively. According to the fitting parameters, the maximum adsorption capacity of CuCo/MIL-101 reached up to 225.179mgg(-1). Additionally, the adsorption process of TC onto CuCo/MIL-101 was spontaneous and endothermic. Electrostatic interactions could play an important role in the adsorption process. The enhanced adsorption capacity, excellent reusability and water stability demonstrated the potential of CuCo/MIL-101 composite as a novel adsorbent for the removal of TC from aqueous solutions.

Genetic improvement through breeding is one of the key approaches to increasing biomass supply. This paper documents the breeding progress to date for four perennial biomass crops (PBCs) that have high output–input energy ratios: namely Panicum virgatum (switchgrass), species of the genera Miscanthus (miscanthus), Salix (willow) and Populus (poplar). For each crop, we report on the size of germplasm collections, the efforts to date to phenotype and genotype, the diversity available for breeding and on the scale of breeding work as indicated by number of attempted crosses. We also report on the development of faster and more precise breeding using molecular breeding techniques. Poplar is the model tree for genetic studies and is furthest ahead in terms of biological knowledge and genetic resources. Linkage maps, transgenesis and genome editing methods are now being used in commercially focused poplar breeding. These are in development in switchgrass, miscanthus and willow generating large genetic and phenotypic data sets requiring concomitant efforts in informatics to create summaries that can be accessed and used by practical breeders. Cultivars of switchgrass and miscanthus can be seed-based synthetic populations, semihybrids or clones. Willow and poplar cultivars are commercially deployed as clones. At local and regional level, the most advanced cultivars in each crop are at technology readiness levels which could be scaled to planting rates of thousands of hectares per year in about 5years with existing commercial developers. Investment in further development of better cultivars is subject to current market failure and the long breeding cycles. We conclude that sustained public investment in breeding plays a key role in delivering future mass-scale deployment of PBCs. © 2018 The Authors. GCB Bioenergy Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

摘要:
Urban heat island (UHI) could have significant impacts on building energy consumption by increasing space cooling demand and decreasing space heating demand. However, the impacts of UHI on building energy consumption were understudied due to challenges associated with quantifying UHI-induced temperature change and evaluating building energy consumption. In this study, we reviewed existing literature for improving the understanding of UHI impacts on building energy consumption. It was found that UHI could result in a median increase of 19.0% in cooling energy consumption and a median decrease of 18.7% in heating energy consumption. The reported UHI impacts showed strong intercity variations with an increase of cooling energy consumption from 10% to 120% and a decrease of heating energy consumption from 3% to 45%. The UHI impacts also showed clear intra-city variations with stronger impacts in urban center than that in urban periphery. There were significant differences in the method and the data used to evaluate the UHI impacts in previous studies. Four future research focuses were recommended to better understand the UHI impacts on building energy consumption. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

A novel adsorbent composite was synthesized by combining amino-functionalized MIL-53(Fe) with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), and used to adsorb tetracycline hydrochloride (TCN) and chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC). The maximum adsorption capacities of TCN and CTC over MWCNT/NH2-MIL-53(Fe) at 25 degrees C were 368.49 and 254.04 mg g(-1), which are, respectively, 1.79 and 837 times higher than that of chaff biochar. Interestingly, the mesoporosity of MWCNT/NH2-MIL-53(Fe) significantly increased through introduction of MWCNT into NH2-MIL-53(Fe), which proved to be favorable for the production of active adsorption sites. Besides, the remarkably increased adsorption capacity can be ascribed to the hydrogen bonding between amino functional groups on MWCNT/NH2MIL-53(Fe) and hydroxyl functional groups on TCN or CTC. Moreover, the pi-pi interaction between adsorbate and adsorbent was considered the main reason for the adsorption of TCN and CTC. The great adsorption capacity, as well as excellent reusability, demonstrated the potential application of MWCNT/NH2-MIL-53(Fe) in the removal of TCN and CTC from aqueous solutions. An increasing amount of evidence suggests that the gut microbiota composition and structure contribute to the pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome (MS), which has been put forward as a new target in the treatment of diet-induced MS. In this work, we aimed to investigate effects of Fuzhuan brick tea polysaccharides (FBTPS) on MS and gut microbiota dysbiosis in high-fat diet (HFD) fed mice and to further investigate whether its attenuation of MS is related to the modulation of gut microbiota. The results showed that FBTPS intervention could significantly attenuate metabolic syndrome in HFD-induced mice. Based on results of sequencing, FBTPS treatment could increase the phylogenetic diversity of HFD-induced microbiota. FBTPS intervention could significantly restore the HFD-induced increases in relative abundances of Erysipelotrichaceae, Coriobacteriaceae, and Streptococcaceae. Spearman's correlation analysis showed that 44 key OTUs were negatively or positively associated with MS. Our results suggested that FBTPS could serve as a novel candidate for prevention of MS in association with the modulation of gut microbiota.

摘要:
Three-dimensional graphene based materials (3D GBMs) as emerging materials have been widely used in various fields. This mini-review selectively highlights the recent research progress in the application of 3D GBMs in organic dyes removal. In particularly, the application potential, catalytic performance, and degradation mechanisms of the 3D GBMs are summarized in this mini-review. The factors affecting the degradation capacity of 3D GBMs are discussed briefly. Furthermore, the possible ongoing researches on 3D GBMs are also put forward. We deem that this mini-review will provide a valuable insight into the design and application of 3D GBMs in environmental field. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

The aim of present study was to examine whether the digestive system (saliva, simulated gastric and small intestinal conditions) could break down and large intestinal microbiota could utilize the polysaccharides from Fuzhuan brick tea (FBTPS). The results showed that there was no change in molecular weight, monosaccharide content and content of reducing sugars before and after saliva, simulated gastric and small intestinal digestion, indicating that FBTPS could pass through the digestive system without being broken down and reach the large intestine safely. The content of carbohydrate was significantly decreased by fermentation in vitro of gut microbiota, suggesting that FBTPS could be broken down and utilized by gut microbiota. FBTPS could significantly modulate the composition and abundance of gut microbiota. Furthermore, the contents of short-chain fatty acids were significantly increased. Therefore, FBTPS is expected to be a functional food to improve human health and prevent disease through promoting the gut health. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

To realize the full utilization of solar energy, the design of highly efficient photocatalyst with improved visible-near-infrared photocatalysis performance has attracted great attentions for environment pollutant removal. In this work, we rationally employed the surface plasmon resonance effect of metallic Ag in the phosphorus doped ultrathin g-C<inf>3</inf>N<inf>4</inf>nanosheets (PCNS) and BiVO<inf>4</inf>composites to construct a ternary Ag@PCNS/BiVO<inf>4</inf>photocatalyst. It was applied for the photodegradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP), exhibiting 92.6% removal efficiency under visible light irradiation (λ>420 nm) for 10 mg/L CIP, and presenting enhanced photocatalytic ability than that of single component or binary nanocomposites under near-infrared light irradiation (λ>760 nm). The improved photocatalytic activity of the prepared Ag@PCNS/BiVO<inf>4</inf>nanocomposite can be attributed to the synergistic effect among the PCNS, BiVO<inf>4</inf>and Ag, which not only improves the visible light response ability and hinders the recombination efficiency of the photogenerated electrons and holes, but also retains the strong the redox ability of the photogenerated charges. According to the trapping experiment and ESR measurements results, [rad]OH, h<sup>+</sup>and [rad]O<inf>2</inf><sup>−</sup>all participated in the photocatalytic degradation process. Considering the SPR effect of metallic Ag and the established local electric field around the interfaces, a dual Z-scheme electrons transfer mechanism was proposed.<br/> ©2017 Elsevier B.V.

Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered as promising precursors for the synthesis of 2D carbon materials for energy storage. However, the high costs and low yields of the synthetic methods for 2D MOFs are major obstacles for the preparation of 2D carbon materials from 2D MOFs. Herein, we report a facile and low-cost bottom-up synthesis of ultrathin Zn(bim)(OAc) MOF nanosheets (with a thickness of ∼5 nm and a high yield of ∼65%) and their derived N-doped porous ultrathin (2.5 ± 0.8 nm) carbon nanosheets (UT-CNSs) for energy storage. The UT-CNSs exhibit a capacitance of 278 F g-1 at a high current density of 10 A g-1, which is the highest among the reported MOF-derived carbon materials for supercapacitor electrodes. In addition, the UT-CNSs also exhibit a high reversible capacity of 553 mA h g-1 at 10 A g-1 and retain 100% coulombic efficiency after 1000 cycles at 2 A g-1 as an anode material for lithium ion batteries. The superior electrochemical properties of the UT-CNSs, especially at high current densities, are mainly due to their ultrathin morphology, large specific surface area, high conductivity, and suitable porous structure. This work provides a new strategy for the high-yield and low-cost synthesis of ultrathin MOF nanosheets as well as 2D carbon materials and their metal or metal oxide composites for various applications. © 2018 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Adsorption of tetracycline antibiotics from aqueous solutions by a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) loaded iron metal-organic framework (MIL-53(Fe)) composite was studied. The adsorbent was characterized by environmental scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, brunauer-emmett-teller, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, fourier transform infrared spectrum, and X-ray photoelectron spectrum. The adsorption kinetics of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCN), oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC), and chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC) were all well fitted to the pseudo-second-order equation as well as the adsorption isotherms could be well delineated via Langmuir equations. The main influencing factors such as pH and ionic strength were studied in detail. At initial pH of 7.0, maximum adsorption capacity of TCN, OTC and CTC on MWCNT/MIL-53(Fe) was 364.37, 325.59, 180.68 mg·g<sup>−1</sup>at 25 °C, which was 1.25, 8.28 and 3.34 times than that of single MWCNT, respectively. The adsorption capacity of TCS for this adsorbent was in the order: TCN >OTC >CTC, which was determined by the adsorbate molecule magnitude. In addition, π-πadsorbate-adsorbent interactions played an important role during the adsorption process. The excellent reusability and great water stability indicated the potential application of this novel composite in the removal of TCS from aqueous solutions.<br/> ©2018

With the development of the degradation of persistent organic pollutants in the wastewater, antibiotics have been considered as emerging pollutants. Their lasting effects on the entire ecosystems directly resulted in irreversible damage all over the world. Electro-Fenton, photo-Fenton, photoelectro-Fenton and solar photoelectro-Fenton processes have been adopted to the elimination of antibiotics for the considerable efficiency. The mechanism, advantage, disadvantage, and the impacts of key parameters for each method are discussed based on the recent works, respectively. The cost aspects of electro-Fenton and photo-Fenton are analyzed for practical application. The degradation pathway as well as the toxicity evaluation of the antibiotics is reviewed. Finally, research needs and unfilled gaps have been proposed, including blocks from unpredicted impurities, pilot-scale study for the remediation of polluted water, pretreatment of antibiotic effluent, cognition of high-performance electrode, and characterization of intermediates. All of them suggested that electro-Fenton and photo-Fenton could be adopted as an ecological and efficiency ways for the elimination of antibiotics. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

Melatonin has been shown to improve lipid metabolism and gut microbiota communities in animals and humans; however, it remains to know whether melatonin prevents obesity through gut microbiota. Here, we found that high-fat diet promoted the lipid accumulation and intestinal microbiota dysbiosis in mice, while oral melatonin supplementation alleviated the lipid accumulation and reversed gut microbiota dysbiosis, including the diversity of intestinal microbiota, relative abundances of Bacteroides and Alistipes, and functional profiling of microbial communities, such as energy metabolism, lipid metabolism, and carbohydrate metabolism. Interestingly, melatonin failed to alleviate the high-fat-induced lipid accumulation in antibiotic-treated mice; however, microbiota transplantation from melatonin-treated mice alleviated high-fat diet-induced lipid metabolic disorders. Notably, short-chain fatty acids were decreased in high-fat diet-fed mice, while melatonin treatment improved the production of acetic acid. Correlation analysis found a marked correlation between production of acetic acid and relative abundances of Bacteroides and Alistipes. Importantly, sodium acetate treatment also alleviated high-fat diet-induced lipid metabolic disorders. Taken together, our results suggest that melatonin improves lipid metabolism in high-fat diet-fed mice, and the potential mechanisms may be associated with reprogramming gut microbiota, especially, Bacteroides and Alistipes-mediated acetic acid production. Future studies are needed for patients with metabolic syndrome to fully understand melatonin’s effects on body weight and lipid profiles and the potential mechanism of gut microbiota. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Millions of Chinese smallholder farmers were persuaded to adopt enhanced management practices, which led to a greater yield, reduced nitrogen fertilizer use and improved environmental performance throughout China. Two and a half billion smallholder farmers collectively manage 60 per cent of the world's arable land. How these farmers perform determines their own livelihood, but also affects global food security and ecosystem health. Here, Fusuo Zhang and colleagues show how some straightforward interventions have substantially improved the productivity and environmental performance of smallholder farmers across China over the past ten years. The team carried out more than 13,000 field trials across China's main agroecological zones and found that a series of management practices, collectively termed integrated soil–crop system management, increased maize, wheat and rice yields, nitrogen-use efficiency and farmer profitability. Scaling this approach up to 20.9 million smallholder farmer across 452 counties boosted grain yields to 33 million tonnes over the ten-year period, and reduced fertilizer use by 1.2 million tonnes and greenhouse gas emissions by up to 13 per cent. Sustainably feeding a growing population is a grand challenge1,2,3, and one that is particularly difficult in regions that are dominated by smallholder farming. Despite local successes4,5,6,7,8, mobilizing vast smallholder communities with science- and evidence-based management practices to simultaneously address production and pollution problems has been infeasible. Here we report the outcome of concerted efforts in engaging millions of Chinese smallholder farmers to adopt enhanced management practices for greater yield and environmental performance. First, we conducted field trials across China’s major agroecological zones to develop locally applicable recommendations using a comprehensive decision-support program. Engaging farmers to adopt those recommendations involved the collaboration of a core network of 1,152 researchers with numerous extension agents and agribusiness personnel. From 2005 to 2015, about 20.9 million farmers in 452 counties adopted enhanced management practices in fields with a total of 37.7 million cumulative hectares over the years. Average yields (maize, rice and wheat) increased by 10.8–11.5%, generating a net grain output of 33 million tonnes (Mt). At the same time, application of nitrogen decreased by 14.7–18.1%, saving 1.2 Mt of nitrogen fertilizers. The increased grain output and decreased nitrogen fertilizer use were equivalent to US$12.2 billion. Estimated reactive nitrogen losses averaged 4.5–4.7 kg nitrogen per Megagram (Mg) with the intervention compared to 6.0–6.4 kg nitrogen per Mg without. Greenhouse gas emissions were 328 kg, 812 kg and 434 kg CO2 equivalent per Mg of maize, rice and wheat produced, respectively, compared to 422 kg, 941 kg and 549 kg CO2 equivalent per Mg without the intervention. On the basis of a large-scale survey (8.6 million farmer participants) and scenario analyses, we further demonstrate the potential impacts of implementing the enhanced management practices on China’s food security and sustainability outlook.

In this study, a novel recyclable Co-doped UiO-66 nanoparticle was synthesized by a one-step solvothermal method. A high adsorption capacity of 224.1 mg g−1 was obtained by the CoUiO-1 nanoparticle, then the adsorbed tetracycline (TC) molecules could be removed more than 94% of initial concentration under simulative sunlight irradiation. The adsorptive ability and photocatalytic performance of CoUiO-1 nanoparticle were about 7.6 and 6.9 times higher than the pristine UiO-66, respectively. The adsorption capacity of CoUiO-1 nanoparticle was sensitive to adsorbent dosage, coexisting ions, solution pH values and initial TC concentrations. Pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models fitted well with the adsorption process. Thermodynamic study indicated the TC adsorption on CoUiO-1 nanoparticle was a spontaneous and exothermic process. TC photodegradation experiment showed that the Co-doped modification expanded light absorption and facilitated charge separation of UiO-66, which was beneficial to enhance photocatalytic performance. The mechanism of TC photodegradation by Co-doped UiO-66 nanoparticle was investigated. Moreover, a plausible degradation pathway for TC was proposed. The high removal efficiencies of CoUiO-1 nanoparticle were obtained towards real samples including tap water, river water and pharmaceutical wastewater. Therefore, the novel Co-doped MOFs photocatalytic adsorbent showed great potential in wastewater treatment. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

Pollution by heavy metals limits the area of land available for cultivation of food crops. A potential solution to this problem might lie in the molecular breeding of food crops for phytoremediation that accumulate toxic metals in straw while producing safe and nutritious grains. Here, we identify a rice quantitative trait locus we name cadmium (Cd) accumulation in leaf 1 (CAL1), which encodes a defensin-like protein. CAL1 is expressed preferentially in root exodermis and xylem parenchyma cells. We provide evidence that CAL1 acts by chelating Cd in the cytosol and facilitating Cd secretion to extracellular spaces, hence lowering cytosolic Cd concentration while driving long-distance Cd transport via xylem vessels. CAL1 does not appear to affect Cd accumulation in rice grains or the accumulation of other essential metals, thus providing an efficient molecular tool to breed dual-function rice varieties that produce safe grains while remediating paddy soils.

Two-dimensional (2D) MXenes have a very good application prospect in the field of electrochemical energy storage due to their metallic conductivity, high volumetric capacity, mechanical and thermal stability. Herein, we report the preparation of titanium carbide (Ti<inf>3</inf>C<inf>2</inf>T<inf>x</inf>)/carbon nanotube (CNT) flexible self-supporting composite films by vacuum filtration. The CNTs can effectively prevent Ti<inf>3</inf>C<inf>2</inf>T<inf>x</inf>from stacking and improve the electrochemical performance. The as-fabricated Ti<inf>3</inf>C<inf>2</inf>T<inf>x</inf>/CNT film shows a high reversible capacity of 489 mA h g<sup>-1</sup>at a current density of 50 mA g<sup>-1</sup>together with good cycling performance. The full-cell lithium-ion capacitor (LIC) is assembled using the Ti<inf>3</inf>C<inf>2</inf>T<inf>x</inf>/CNT film as the anode and activated carbon as the cathode. The LIC exhibits a high energy density of 67 Wh kg<sup>-1</sup>(based on the total weight of the anode and the cathode), and a good capacity retention of 81.3% after 5000 cycles. These results suggest that Ti<inf>3</inf>C<inf>2</inf>T<inf>x</inf>-CNT films are promising as anode materials for lithium ion capacitors.<br/> ©2018 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Developing CRISPR/Cas9-mediated non-transgenic mutants in asexually propagated perennial crop plants is challenging but highly desirable. Here, we report a highly useful method using an Agrobacterium-mediated transient CRISPR/Cas9 gene expression system to create non-transgenic mutant plants without the need for sexual segregation. We have also developed a rapid, cost-effective, and high-throughput mutant screening protocol based on Illumina sequencing followed by high-resolution melting (HRM) analysis. Using tetraploid tobacco as a model species and the phytoene desaturase (PDS) gene as a target, we successfully created and expediently identified mutant plants, which were verified as tetra-allelic mutants. We produced pds mutant shoots at a rate of 47.5% from tobacco leaf explants, without the use of antibiotic selection. Among these pds plants, 17.2% were confirmed to be non-transgenic, for an overall non-transgenic mutation rate of 8.2%. Our method is reliable and effective in creating non-transgenic mutant plants without the need to segregate out transgenes through sexual reproduction. This method should be applicable to many economically important, heterozygous, perennial crop species that are more difficult to regenerate.

Abstract: In recent years, lithium batteries using conventional organic liquid electrolytes have been found to possess a series of safety concerns. Because of this, solid polymer electrolytes, benefiting from shape versatility, flexibility, low-weight and low processing costs, are being investigated as promising candidates to replace currently available organic liquid electrolytes in lithium batteries. However, the inferior ion diffusion and poor mechanical performance of these promising solid polymer electrolytes remain a challenge. To resolve these challenges and improve overall comprehensive performance, polymers are being coordinated with other components, including liquid electrolytes, polymers and inorganic fillers, to form polymer-based composite electrolytes. In this review, recent advancements in polymer-based composite electrolytes including polymer/liquid hybrid electrolytes, polymer/polymer coordinating electrolytes and polymer/inorganic composite electrolytes are reviewed; exploring the benefits, synergistic mechanisms, design methods, and developments and outlooks for each individual composite strategy. This review will also provide discussions aimed toward presenting perspectives for the strategic design of polymer-based composite electrolytes as well as building a foundation for the future research and development of high-performance solid polymer electrolytes. DNA N 6 -methyladenine (6mA) modification is the most prevalent DNA modification in prokaryotes, but whether it exists in human cells and whether it plays a role in human diseases remain enigmatic. Here, we showed that 6mA is extensively present in the human genome, and we cataloged 881,240 6mA sites accounting for ∼0.051% of the total adenines. [G/C]AGG[C/T] was the most significantly associated motif with 6mA modification. 6mA sites were enriched in the coding regions and mark actively transcribed genes in human cells. DNA 6mA and N 6 -demethyladenine modification in the human genome were mediated by methyltransferase N6AMT1 and demethylase ALKBH1, respectively. The abundance of 6mA was significantly lower in cancers, accompanied by decreased N6AMT1 and increased ALKBH1 levels, and downregulation of 6mA modification levels promoted tumorigenesis. Collectively, our results demonstrate that DNA 6mA modification is extensively present in human cells and the decrease of genomic DNA 6mA promotes human tumorigenesis. Xiao et al. show that DNA methylation on N 6 -adenine exists in the human genome. The mark is added by the methyltransferase N6AMT1 and it is removed by the demethylase ALKBH1. Decrease of genomic DNA 6mA promotes tumorigenesis and is associated with poor prognosis for cancer patients. © 2018 Elsevier Inc.
