According to reports, antibiotics have various interference effects on anaerobic digestion, such as the accumulation of organic acids, inhibition of biogas production, and imbalance of microbial communities (Chen et al., 2016; Shimada et al., 2011). As a common biological engineering technology, anaerobic digestion can stabilize sewage sludge and convert the carbon compounds into renewable energy (i.e., methane). However, anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge is severely affected by antibiotics.
