Endophytes may benefit hosts through diverse mechanisms, such as molecules that increase their capacity to compete for space, nutrients and/or ecological niches, the synthesis of antimicrobial substances or the synthesis of inducers of plant growth, or compounds like phytohormones and peptides that might keep vegetables or plant organs healthy, which additionally might have no negative environmental effects on consumers.
