Microplastics (MPs), an emerging global pollutant, are widely present in different ecosystems due to the overuse of plastic worldwide, causing potential risks to the health of humans and other animals. Wastewater contains high levels of MPs, and most of them (≈99%) remain in sewage sludge even after highly efficient wastewater treatment processes. Part of these MPs finally enters the soil ecosystem as sludge is spread on soil.
