BACKGROUND: Combining ability effects are very effective genetic parameters in deciding the next phase of breeding programs. Although some breeding strategies on the basis of evaluating combining ability have been utilized extensively in hybrid breeding, little is known about the genetic basis of combining ability. Combining ability is a complex trait that is controlled by polygenes. With the advent and development of molecular markers, it is feasible to evaluate the genetic bases of combining ability and heterosis of elite rice hybrids through QTL analysis. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In the present study, we first developed a QTL-mapping method for dissecting combining ability and heterosis of agronomic traits. With three testcross populations and a BCRIL population in rice, biometric and QTL analyses were conducted for ten agronomic traits. The significance of general combining ability and special combining ability for most of the traits indicated the importance of both additive and non-additive effects on expression levels. A large number of additive effect QTLs associated with performance per se of BCRIL and general combining ability, and dominant effect QTLs associated with special combining ability and heterosis were identified for the ten traits. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The combining ability of agronomic traits could be analyzed by the QTL mapping method. The characteristics revealed by the QTLs for combining ability of agronomic traits were similar with those by multitudinous QTLs for agronomic traits with performance per se of BCRIL. Several QTLs (1-6 in this study) were identified for each trait for combining ability. It demonstrated that some of the QTLs were pleiotropic or linked tightly with each other. The identification of QTLs responsible for combining ability and heterosis in the present study provides valuable information for dissecting genetic basis of combining ability.

The genus Orientopius Fischer, 1966 (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Opiinae) is reported for the first time from continental China and a new species (O. punctatus sp. n.) is described from Hunan. Orientiopius tambourinus Fischer, 1966, is transferred back to the genus Orientopius. A key to the Indo-Australian species is added.

This paper described a simplified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe (QuEChERS) approach for determination of pyrazosulfuron-ethyl (PE) from soil samples by high performance liquid chromatography/ultraviolet (HPLC/UV) detector. Optimized results were obtained dispersing soil in water, followed by the addition of 1% acetic acid (HOAc) in acetonitrile (MeCN), anhydrous magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) and sodium acetate tri-hydrate (NaOAc.3H(2)O), which was a modification of QuEChERS method without primary and secondary amine (PSA) and C-18 sorbent. The results showed the recovery ranged from 70.8% to 99.0% and 83.5% to 86.4% with the relative standard deviations of 2.1% to 7.9% and 7.0% to 10.0% in Changsha and Nanning soil samples, respectively. The limit of detection (LOD) of the method was 0.05 mg/Kg. The limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.1 mg/Kg.

Inhibitor of apoptosis protein-like protein-2 (ILP-2) has only been detected in the testis and in lymphoblastoid cells. Although previous studies have not reported the presence of ILP-2 in breast cancer tissues, this study indicates the presence of ILP-2 in breast cancer serum samples. To validate whether ILP-2 is a novel serological biomarker for breast cancer, we conducted two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry analysis on 400 breast cancer serum samples and 40 non-cancer serum samples (i.e., healthy controls). We then performed a Western blot analysis of 10 breast cancer serum samples and 10 non-cancer serum samples. Finally, we analyzed 35 serum samples from healthy controls or subjects with breast cancer, other types of cancer, galactophore hyperplasia or breast cancer post-surgery by using 2DE and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Our results indicate that ILP-2 is a novel breast cancer biomarker in the peripheral blood.

Psyttoma gen. n. (type species: Opius latilabris Chen & Weng, 2005) from Shandong and Hubei (China) is described and illustrated (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Opiinae). Psyttoma latilabris (Chen & Weng, 2005) and P. wachsmanni (Szepligeti, 1898) are new combinations.

To establish the regeneration system of axillary buds from Triarrhena lutarioriparia var. lutarioriparia, several induction media with different plant growth regulators concentrations were orthogonally designed to induce callus. The results showed that KT and 6-BA were the key factors to the induction and differentiation of callus of axillary buds, and calli were found to emerge after 7-10 d. The callus induction frequency (CIF) and callus differentiation frequency (CDF) were 42% and 85%.The highest number of seedlings per callus was regenerated after the third subculture, the lowest number of seedlings per callus after the fourth subculture.
