Gossypol is a yellow polyphenolic compound from cotton plant. It has been shown to exert a potential for anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and anti-fertility effects. Following effects of gossypol acetic acid (GA) in mice were determined in the present study: influence on the total number of lymphocytes, weight ratio and subsets of lymphocytes in the thymus, spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes, and humoral immune response to sheep erythrocytes (SRBC). Gossypol acetic acid was administered orally four times at 24 h intervals at three doses of 5.0, 25.0 and 125.0 mg/kg to SRBC-immunized mice (prior to or after priming), and non-immunized mice. It was found that GA decreased the total number of lymphocytes in thymus and mesenteric lymph nodes. Gossypol acetic acid dependent on the dosage decreased the percentage and absolute count of CD4+ thymocytes but increased the percentage and absolute count of CD8+ lymphocytes in spleen and lymph nodes. In SRBC-immunized mice, GA at the doses of 25.0 and 125.0 mg/kg administered prior to SRBC reduced the number of plaque forming cells (PFC) and the production of IgG. However, GA administered after priming decreased the production of IgM and IgG. In vitro, GA inhibited proliferation of J774.E murine macrophages in a dose- and time-dependent manner.

Very virulent infectious bursal disease virus (vvIBDV) can cause systemic inflammatory syndromes and acute death in specific-pathogen-free chickens within 72 h. However, the subtle mechanism of these severe inflammatory responses has been unsatisfactorily resolved until now. This study determined the kinetics of mast cells, tryptase, eosinophilic major basic protein, and eotaxin expression in specific-pathogen-free chickens after vvIBDV infection. Results showed that mast cell population, tryptase activity, major basic protein, and eotaxin expression were increased markedly in the vvIBDV-infected animals compared with the controls, with a significant difference in the bursa. Acute inflammatory lesions and high mortality were observed in vvIBDV-infected chickens. These observations implicate activated mast cells and eosinophils as important participants in vvIBDV-induced acute inflammatory lesions through mediators released in a short timeframe.

The prevalence of porcine sapovirus infection in weanling pigs was investigated in Hunan Province, China, between August 2006 and October 2007. A total of 153 diarrheic fecal samples from ten intensive pig farms from ten representative administrative regions in Hunan province were examined for porcine sapoviruses using RT-PCR. Twenty-two of 153 (14.37 %) samples were found to contain porcine sapoviruses. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all the porcine sapovirus isolates in Hunan Province belonged to the porcine sapovirus genogroup III. The results of the present investigation have implications for the control of porcine sapovirus infection in pigs in Hunan Province, China.

Background: Angiopoietin-like protein 3 (ANGPTL3), a member of angiopoietin-like proteins, has been demonstrated to affect lipid metabolism by inhibiting the activity of lipoprotein lipase (LPL). Objective: To compare the ANGPTL3 mRNA and protein expression, exon mutation and promoter district CpG island methylation state between Ningxiang Pigs and Changbai Pigs. Methods: Pigs were slaughtered and about 100 mg of tissue samples and subcutaneous adipose tissue were collected and stored for analysis. Quantitative Real-Time PCR, Western blotting, exons sequencing, and HRM analysis were carried out. Results: ANGPTL3 was expressed in liver but not in fat and lean meat. Compared with Changbai pigs, ANGPTL3 mRNA level in Ningxiang pigs was lower. However, the protein expression showed no difference between these two groups of pigs. Sequences analysis showed that four variations existed between Changbai Pigs and Ningxiang Pigs, among which three variations caused no change of amino acids, and the other one caused amino acid mutation from Val (Changbai) to Met (Ningxiang). The ANGPTL3 promoter district CpG island bisulfite-PCR and sequencing results showed that the mean methylation rate ranged from 70.952% to 95.238% between Changbai pig and Ningxiang pig (p<0.05). Conclusion: These results support the significant difference (p<0.05) between Changbai pig and Ningxiang pig in high-resolution melting (HRM) analysis. All these results may be helpful for a better understanding of the role of ANGPTL3 in lipid metabolism.

An increasing number of people are processing transactions online and the numbers are likely to increase rapidly in the near future. It is important to analyze the relationship between customer values of social network service and Customer Loyalty. The purpose of this paper is to answer the following questions. First, what are key components of customer value in social network service? Second, what influences the relationship between customer value and Customer Loyalty? Data collected from 160 respondents who participate in social network service were used to test a research model. Several managerial implications were derived from the analysis and further studies were suggested.

Trimethoprim (TMP) and diaveridine (DVD) are used in combination with sulfonamides and sulfaquinoxlaine as an effective antibacterial agent and antiprotozoal agent, respectively, in humans and animals. To gain a better understanding of the metabolism of TMP and DVD in the food-producing animals, the metabolites incubated with liver microsomes of pigs were analyzed for the first time with high-performance liquid chromatography combined with hybrid ion trap/time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Seven TMP-related and six DVD-related metabolites were characterized based on the accurate MS2 spectra and known structure of the parent drug, respectively. The metabolites of TMP were identified as two O-demethylation metabolites, a di-O-demethylation metabolite, two N-oxides metabolites, a hydroxylated metabolite on the methylene carbon and a hydroxylated metabolite on the methyl group. DVD was also biotransformed to two O-demethylation metabolites, a di-O-demethylation metabolite, an N-oxide metabolite, a hydroxylation metabolite on the methylene carbon and a hydroxylation metabolite followed by O-demethylation. The results indicate that the two compounds have similar biotransformation pathways in pigs. O-Demethylation was the major metabolic route of TMP and DVD in the pig liver microsomes. The proposed metabolic pathways of TMP and DVD in liver microsomes will provide a basis for further studies of the in vivo metabolism of the two drugs in food-producing animals.
